Lasik Eye Surgery

Lasik Eye Surgery Explained

by | 17 Oct 2020

Lasik eye surgery is the name for the most common type of laser eye surgery.

Simply explained, Lasik eye surgery permanently changes the shape of the cornea, which is the clear covering on the front of your eye. Most people who need the treatment have a flat, thick cornea rather than the curved cornea in people who have excellent eyesight.

Lasik essentially bends the cornea to improve your eyesight. Most people will achieve 20/25 vision or better from Lasik.

Is Lasik eye surgery safe?

It is estimated that over 40 million people have had Lasik eye surgery worldwide. It is a simple and highly effective treatment that is extremely safe.

All patients must undergo an extensive eye examination which will ensure that they are suitable for lasik eye surgery. This prior examination which can last up to 2-hours is vital, as are the essential aftercare sessions you will be booked in for after the surgery itself.

For your safety it is important that the initial eye exam, and the Lasik procedure itself, is carried out by an ophthalmic surgeon. This is a medical doctor with many additional years of training and experience. It should be the same person who is to carry out your surgery.

How long does Lasik Eye Surgery take?

You will usually be in and out within 30-minutes and most of that time is spent in preparation and relaxation for the surgery itself which only lasts a matter of seconds for each eye.

How does Lasik work?

For good clear vision, the cornea and lens must bend  to refract light correctly. If not then images will be blurry. This refractive error is caused by a mismatch between the shape of the cornea and the length of the eye.

Lasik uses an ultraviolet laser to remove a thin layer of corneal tissue so that light rays are focused clearly on the retina. The amount of tissue the laser will remove is calculated ahead of time by your surgeon during your eye examination. The surgeon calculates this based on several factors including:

  • The strength of your glasses or contact lens prescription
  • A wavefront technology test, which measures how light travels through your eyes
  • The shape and curvature of your cornea surface

Does Lasik eye surgery hurt?

No Lasik does not hurt. The surgeon will provide anesthetic eye drops to numb the surface of the eye and you will be given an oral medication (valium or something similar) to help you relax.
